Chapter 4 - The Silent Alarm

The entire world started spinning as the horrifying reality of my missing daughters fully set in.
Nick had somehow outsmarted and eliminated Eleanor's highly trained security team.
"Take me to the agency right now," I told the driver with a terrifying, unnatural calm.
Eleanor handed me a small metallic device that looked exactly like a standard flash drive.
"Plug this directly into his mainframe when you get inside," she instructed nervously.
"It will bypass the building's lockdown protocols and drain his offshore accounts completely."
I shoved the device deeply into my pocket and loaded a heavy metal flashlight into my bag to use as a weapon.
The driver dropped me two blocks away from my former workplace to avoid detection.
The city streets were empty, dark, and drenched in a freezing, relentless rain.
I used my deactivated keycard and a hidden maintenance code I knew to pop the rear service door.
The office was completely dark, smelling strongly of stale coffee and electronic ozone.
I crept silently through the endless cubicles toward Nick's luxurious executive suite.
His heavy glass door was slightly ajar and the lock was broken.
I stepped inside cautiously and found the room completely trashed and ruined.
Paper files were scattered everywhere, the wall safe was blown open, and fresh blood stained the expensive carpet.
I heard a faint, wet groan coming from behind the large mahogany desk.
I shined my flashlight downward and gasped at the gruesome sight.
Nick was lying on the floor with a massive, bleeding gunshot wound to his shoulder.

He looked up at me with terrified, tear-filled eyes.
"It wasn't me, Sebastian, I swear to God it wasn't me," Nick choked out in agony.
