Chapter 7 - The Descent

I grabbed a heavy fire extinguisher from the wall bracket in the pitch black room.
"She is pumping toxic gas into the vents," Nick warned, coughing violently as white smoke poured in.
I aimed the heavy red cylinder at the reinforced glass window facing the narrow back alley.
I swung with all my remaining strength and shattered the thick pane into a million falling pieces.
Cold night air rushed in immediately, clearing the deadly toxic gas from our burning lungs.
"We have to jump to the rusted fire escape on the building next door," I said, looking at the terrifying gap.
Nick hesitated in fear, clutching his bleeding shoulder and swaying on his feet.
"I will never make it across that drop," he said, sinking slowly to the floor.
"You are going to make it because I need your car to get to my kids," I yelled fiercely.
I grabbed his leather belt and practically threw his body across the terrifying five-foot gap.
He landed hard on the rusted metal platform, groaning loudly in fresh pain.
I leaped across the abyss right after him just as the server room door blew entirely off its hinges.
We scrambled down the loud metal fire escape into the dark, rainy alleyway below.
Nick's sleek sports car was hidden safely in a private garage directly across the street.
I threw him into the passenger seat and took the steering wheel myself.
I slammed the accelerator hard, tearing through the wet city streets toward the industrial docks.

My phone buzzed on the dashboard, displaying a live video feed from an unknown sender.
It showed my twin girls tied to wooden chairs, suspended precariously over a massive vat of deep water.
