Chapter 8 - The Cavalry

The concrete ceiling above us began to shake violently, sending clouds of dust raining down on the police cruisers.
Three massive military transport vehicles smashed completely through the locked steel gates of the parking garage.
The real FBI tactical response team poured out of the vehicles, heavily armed and wearing advanced combat armor.
Major Hayes had secretly broadcast a distress signal to his federal contacts the moment we entered the compromised courthouse.
The corrupt mercenary realized his entire operation was exposed and instantly ordered his rogue officers to open fire.
A chaotic and deafening firefight erupted inside the enclosed concrete structure, filling the air with smoke and flying sparks.
Daniel pulled me behind the thick engine block of a parked SUV to protect me from the hail of bullets.
I peeked around the tire and saw Caleb abandoning our mother on the ground to save his own life.
My brother sprinted toward the stolen hard drive, desperately hoping to grab it and disappear into the city shadows.
I broke cover and ran directly through the crossfire, refusing to let my father's legacy fall into enemy hands again.
I tackled Caleb to the hard pavement just as his fingers brushed against the smooth metal surface of the drive.
He fought back with a frantic, uncoordinated panic, scratching and punching blindly at my face.
I easily subdued him, pinning his arms behind his back with the precise, mechanical efficiency of a seasoned soldier.
I looked down at the younger brother I had once loved and felt nothing but profound, irreversible disappointment.
The FBI agents quickly overwhelmed the corrupt police officers, forcing the surviving mercenaries to surrender their weapons.
Daniel walked over and placed heavy steel handcuffs on Caleb, pulling him roughly off the concrete floor.

I picked up the hard drive and finally let out a long, exhausted breath, believing the nightmare was officially over.
Then, I heard the unmistakable sound of a weapon being chambered right behind my head.
