Chapter 4 - The Holding Cell

Thick clouds of white tear gas poured through the shattered windows, instantly blinding everyone in the room.
I pulled my jacket over my mouth and nose to filter the burning chemical smoke from my lungs.
I heard the heavy thud of tactical boots landing on the wooden floorboards near the jury box.
Someone grabbed my arm with incredible force and dragged me out of the main courtroom into the adjacent holding cells.
I threw a defensive elbow backward, striking my captor squarely in the jaw.
A familiar voice grunted in pain, telling me to stand down before I broke his nose.
I opened my tear-filled eyes and saw Major Daniel Hayes standing in front of me in full combat gear.
He had defied direct orders from his superiors to bring our covert unit here to save my life.
Daniel handed me a loaded tactical pistol and told me that the courthouse was completely compromised.
He explained that Caleb had paid millions to a private military corporation to lock down the entire building.
My father’s company possessed a revolutionary drone navigation code that Caleb was trying to steal and sell.
Daniel and I moved silently through the dark holding cell block, listening for any approaching footsteps.
We found the courthouse security room, but all the guards inside had already been brutally eliminated.
I checked the security monitors and saw my mother casually walking out of the building escorted by heavily armed men.
She was carrying the main server hard drive containing my father's priceless navigation code.
I turned to Daniel and told him we had to intercept her before she reached the underground parking garage.

Suddenly, a heavy steel blast door slammed shut behind us, locking us inside the tiny security room.
A mechanical voice echoed through the intercom, announcing that the room would incinerate in exactly sixty seconds.
