Chapter 2 - The Shell Game

I stared at the cold, dead eyes of the mercenary masquerading as a federal agent.

The clock above the judge’s bench quietly clicked forward to eleven fifty-one in the morning.

I needed to buy exactly nine more minutes of time to expose this entire fraudulent trial.

I turned to the judge and loudly invoked my legal right to question the primary witness on the stand.

The corrupt agent hesitated, unable to shoot my lawyer while the judge was actively watching us.

The judge slammed his wooden gavel repeatedly, ordering everyone to sit down and restore order to the court.

I walked slowly toward the witness stand where my mother was still sitting with a pale, nervous face.

I asked her if she recognized the snake tattoo on the wrist of the man standing behind me.

Victoria swallowed hard, her eyes darting frantically toward Caleb for any kind of instruction.

I raised my voice, accusing her of using Bennett Meridian Systems to fund a dangerous foreign syndicate.

The prosecutor immediately objected, claiming my questions were completely irrelevant to my stolen valor charges.

I ignored the prosecutor and revealed the exact offshore bank account numbers my father had memorized before he died.

My mother gasped audibly, completely shocked that I knew the digital codes she had hidden so carefully.

Caleb stood up and angrily demanded that the judge have me removed from the room by force.

The corrupt agent finally lost his patience and drew his weapon in the middle of the crowded courtroom.

The audience screamed in sheer terror as the mercenary aimed his gun directly at my head.

I did not flinch, knowing that my combat training had prepared me for much worse than this.

Just as the mercenary placed his finger on the trigger, the courthouse fire alarms began to shriek deafeningly.
