Chapter 6 - The Inside Man

The person holding the gun to my neck ordered Daniel to drop his weapon and kick it away.
Daniel reluctantly complied, keeping his eyes locked on my face to communicate without words.
The man holding me hostage slowly stepped forward into the dim light of the parking garage.
It was Marcus, my father’s former business partner who had supposedly died of a heart attack six months ago.
Marcus smirked and revealed that he had faked his own death to orchestrate this massive technology theft from the shadows.
He proudly explained that he had manipulated my mother and brother into turning against me to secure the drone code.
Caleb turned around and looked at Marcus with a confused and terrified expression on his face.
My brother finally realized that he was not the criminal mastermind in charge, but merely a disposable pawn.
Marcus coldly raised his weapon and shot the foreign buyer in the chest, stealing the briefcase full of money for himself.
He then pointed the gun directly at Caleb, intending to eliminate all loose ends before escaping the country.
My mother screamed in sheer terror and threw her body over Caleb to protect him from the gunfire.
I used the brief moment of distraction to execute a rapid disarming maneuver I had taught at the military academy.
I twisted Marcus's wrist sharply, forcing him to drop his weapon as I delivered a punishing kick to his knee.
Marcus collapsed in pain, but he quickly pulled a secondary knife from his boot and slashed wildly at my face.
I dodged the blade, grabbed his arm, and used his own momentum to throw him violently against a concrete pillar.
He slumped to the ground completely unconscious, leaving the stolen hard drive lying unprotected on the pavement.

I walked over to the drive and picked it up, feeling the immense weight of my father’s legacy in my hands.
Just as I turned around, a fleet of heavily armed police cruisers aggressively swarmed into the underground garage.
