Chapter 7 - The Underground Station

Adrian did not hesitate to fund the exchange.
He packed two million dollars of untraceable bills into a black duffel bag.
He told me to stay at the mansion where it was safe.
I absolutely refused to hide while my brother’s life hung in the balance.
I told Adrian that Chloe would only hand the drive to someone she knew.
Adrian reluctantly agreed, but he handed me a small, lightweight pistol.
He taught me how to disengage the safety with my left hand.
We drove to an abandoned subway station on the edge of the city.
The air smelled heavily of damp concrete and old rust.
Adrian’s guards secured the perimeter of the dark platform.
I walked down the broken escalator with Adrian close by my side.
The station was eerily silent.
I called out Chloe’s name into the darkness.
Only the echo of my own voice answered me.
We turned the corner near the old ticketing booths.
I stopped dead in my tracks and gasped.
