Chapter 2 - The Midnight Deadline

I stared at the doctor in complete disbelief.

My mind raced back to the party.

Derek had handed me that specific glass of champagne right before asking for an apology.

He wanted me weak, disoriented, and physically unable to hold a pen.

Adrian stood near the window with his arms crossed over his chest.

He asked me why my husband would go to such extreme lengths to stop me from writing.

I looked down at my throbbing, heavily bandaged hand.

I explained that my father’s trust was scheduled to transfer six million dollars into my account at midnight.

If I was physically or mentally incapacitated tonight, the money would default to my legal spouse.

Adrian checked his expensive watch.

It was currently ten-thirty in the evening.

Derek was trying to steal the inheritance right out from under me.

Adrian pulled out his phone and made a hushed call to his financial team.

He ordered them to freeze every single asset attached to Derek’s name.

I felt a sudden rush of gratitude for this terrifying stranger.

I asked Adrian why he was going out of his way to help me.

He simply replied that he never forgot a debt, and I had saved his mother.

His phone buzzed with an incoming encrypted message.

Adrian read the screen and his jaw clenched tightly.

He walked over to my hospital bed with a dark shadow passing over his eyes.

He told me that Derek did not just want the six million dollars tonight.

His team had just uncovered a massive life insurance policy.

Derek had secretly insured my life for ten million dollars exactly three days ago.
