Chapter 3 - The Burning Bridge

A cold sweat broke out across my forehead.
My husband did not just want to steal from me.
He was actively planning to murder me tonight.
Adrian refused to let me return to my house.
He told me that my home was now the most dangerous place in the city.
He offered me complete sanctuary at his private estate outside the city limits.
I had no other choice but to accept his protection.
We drove through the dark streets in total silence.
I borrowed a phone from one of his bodyguards to check the local news.
My heart completely stopped when a breaking news alert flashed across the screen.
The news anchor was standing in front of a massive inferno.
It was my house.
The entire structure was engulfed in violent orange flames.
I watched in horror as the roof collapsed on live television.
Derek was standing near an ambulance, his face covered in soot and tears.
He was giving a heartbreaking interview to a local reporter.
He cried that I had left the party early in a deeply depressed state.
He claimed I had locked myself in the bedroom and started the fire.

The reporter solemnly announced that firefighters had just recovered a body.
The body was wearing a red dress identical to the one I had worn to my birthday party.
