Chapter 4 - The Perfect Scapegoat

I dropped the phone onto the leather seat of the SUV.
I was officially dead to the world.
Derek had hired a body double and murdered her just to fake my suicide.
Adrian picked up the phone and watched the broadcast with cold calculation.
He noted that Derek was establishing a perfect alibi.
Derek would collect the trust money as my grieving widower and claim the life insurance payout.
I felt completely sick to my stomach.
I told Adrian we had to call the police and tell them I was alive.
Adrian shook his head slowly.
He warned me that Derek clearly had people inside the police department to pull off a fake body identification this quickly.
If I walked into a police station tonight, I would be killed in a holding cell.
We arrived at Adrian’s heavily fortified mansion in the hills.
Armed guards patrolled every inch of the perimeter.
I was escorted into a luxurious guest room, but it felt like a gilded cage.
I turned on the television to watch the continued coverage of my own death.
The police chief was now holding a press conference outside my burning home.
He announced that they had found evidence of arson in the backyard.
He stated that it was no longer a suicide investigation, but a murder case.

Then, he released the name of their primary suspect.
They were actively hunting for my younger brother, Leo.
