Chapter 9 - The Final Seconds

The fresh, warm blood splashed onto the wall absolutely did not belong to me.
Dr. Evans violently gasped for air, his eyes going incredibly wide as he stared down at his own ruined chest.
He dropped his heavy weapon immediately and collapsed face-first onto the tile floor, completely revealing the dark doorway behind him.
Victoria Vance stood there shaking, holding a smoking silver revolver in her perfectly manicured hands.
She dropped the gun heavily onto the floor and fell to her knees, sobbing uncontrollably that she never wanted anyone to actually die tonight.
The loud, wailing police sirens echoed clearly in the distance, growing significantly louder and closer by the second.
She had realized hours ago that the greedy doctor had double-crossed her, and she had ultimately called the authorities herself.
I ignored her pathetic tears completely and crawled aggressively over the doctor's lifeless body into the bright hallway.
I sprinted wildly down the long, sterile corridor, screaming my daughter's beautiful name at the absolute top of my lungs.
A faint, heavily muffled cry finally answered me from behind a massive steel vault door located at the very end of the hall.
I threw my entire body weight against the heavy locking wheel, spinning it desperately until the massive internal bolts clicked open.
I pulled the heavy steel door wide open, rushing frantically into the freezing, windowless concrete room.
My beautiful baby girl was lying safely and warmly inside a padded, high-tech medical incubator.
I reached out joyfully to grab her, hot tears of absolute, profound joy streaming quickly down my dirty face.
Then, a bright red, rapidly flashing light located on the bottom of the incubator suddenly caught my eye.
A massive block of military-grade plastic explosives was wired directly to the base of the delicate machine.
The bright digital timer attached securely to the front of the bomb read exactly forty-five seconds.
I screamed loudly for Ethan as the timer beeped sharply, immediately dropping down to forty-four.
May you like
I tried frantically to lift the baby out, but the cruel doctor had permanently locked the thick glass lid of the incubator.
We were completely trapped inside a concrete vault with a highly active bomb and absolutely no physical way to open the glass.
