Chapter 4 - The Empty Promise

Ethan threw the stolen car into park before the tires had even fully stopped moving.

We both sprinted desperately across the wet, slippery concrete pavement toward the illuminated bassinet.

The icy wind howled viciously off the dark water, masking the loud sound of our frantic footsteps.

I reached the small cradle first and violently threw back the heavy pink thermal blanket.

My heart completely stopped beating in my chest as I stared into the soft cradle.

The bassinet was completely empty.

A sharp, elegant laugh suddenly echoed from the deep, impenetrable shadows of the empty warehouse.

An older woman stepped slowly into the harsh light, draped in a luxurious fur coat and dripping with flawless diamonds.

Her piercing blue eyes looked exactly like the ones Ethan saw in the mirror every single day.

Ethan stepped protectively in front of me, shouting his mother’s name angrily into the freezing wind.

Victoria Vance smiled coldly and told her son it was finally time to stop playing house with a commoner.

She proudly admitted she was the one who brilliantly orchestrated the entire kidnapping, not his brother Julian.

She had secretly located Julian in his overseas prison, paid an exorbitant bribe for his quiet release, and ordered him to take my baby.

She held up a thick manila folder filled with heavily notarized legal documents.

She promised to hand over my newborn daughter right now if I signed the divorce papers and relinquished all parental rights forever.

Hot tears streamed down my face as I realized this cruel woman simply wanted to erase me from Ethan's life completely.

I didn't even hesitate for a single second.

I aggressively snatched the expensive fountain pen from her hand and signed my name on every single dotted line.

I shoved the signed papers hard against her chest and screamed at her to give me my baby immediately.

Victoria looked down at the messy signatures with a triumphant, wicked smile on her face.

She casually tossed the crucial folder to her massive, armed bodyguard standing quietly nearby.

She looked me dead in the eye and casually mentioned that Julian had unfortunately gone completely rogue.

She casually confessed that Julian had cut off all communication hours ago, and she actually had absolutely no idea where my baby was.
