Chapter 1 - The Stranger in the Doorway

The heavy wooden door of the recovery room suddenly slammed hard against the wall.
A frantic woman in a torn hospital gown stumbled blindly into the room, gasping for air.
Her wild, tear-filled eyes darted around the space until they locked instantly onto the pink bundle in my arms.
She pointed a trembling finger directly at me and screamed at the top of her lungs that I had stolen her child.
Ethan jumped up from his chair, immediately positioning his body between my bed and the frantic stranger.
A team of nurses rushed in right behind her, grabbing her arms and trying to pull her back into the hallway.
The head nurse looked at Ethan with deep panic in her eyes and begged us to stay calm.
She explained that there had been a catastrophic power failure in the neonatal ward during my twenty-one hours of labor.
In the complete darkness and chaos of the emergency backup generators kicking in, several bassinets had been moved to secure locations.
Ethan slowly looked back at me, his face turning incredibly pale and drained of all color.
He finally finished his interrupted confession, whispering that he had secretly gotten a vasectomy five years ago.
He knew with absolute medical certainty that it was physically impossible for him to be the father of the child I was holding.
The room spun wildly around me as the head nurse scanned the barcode on the baby's tiny ankle monitor.
She looked up with sheer terror on her face and confirmed that the baby in my arms actually belonged to the screaming woman.
I handed the crying infant back to her rightful mother, my heart completely shattering into a million pieces.
I grabbed the head nurse tightly by her scrubs and demanded to know exactly where my real daughter was.
The nurse stuttered, her voice shaking uncontrollably as she backed away from my bed.
She told us the hospital security footage showed a man leaving the maternity ward with my baby hidden under a coat.

She turned her digital tablet around to show us the frozen surveillance frame of the kidnapping suspect.
The man walking out the automatic hospital doors with my newborn daughter was undeniably Ethan.
