Chapter 10 - A Perfect Ending

Ethan painfully dragged his bleeding body into the vault, leaving a thick, terrifying trail of blood behind him.
He saw the rapidly flashing digital timer and used the absolute last of his fading adrenaline to surge violently forward.
He ignored the incredibly complex explosive wiring entirely, desperately grabbing a heavy steel oxygen tank from the corner of the room.
With a loud, primal roar, he smashed the heavy metal tank directly into the center of the reinforced glass lid.
The thick, heavy glass shattered completely into a million tiny, perfectly harmless granular pieces.
I plunged my shaking hands quickly into the incubator and pulled my screaming daughter incredibly tight against my chest.
Ethan grabbed my arm tightly and we ran desperately out of the vault just as the digital timer finally hit zero.
A massive, fiery explosion ripped violently through the back of the clinic, throwing us completely out the front doors onto the soft grass.
Paramedics and heavily armed police swarmed the chaotic area instantly, pulling us quickly and safely away from the burning wreckage.
They loaded Ethan carefully onto a waiting stretcher, firmly assuring me that his wound was completely clean and he would fully recover.
Victoria Vance was immediately led away to a police cruiser in tight steel handcuffs, her long reign of terror finally over for good.
Two incredibly peaceful years later, Ethan and I sat happily together on the porch of our beautiful new home in a quiet, friendly neighborhood.
Little Lily was running joyfully across the bright green grass, laughing loudly as she chased a bright yellow butterfly.
The terrifying nightmare was finally just a distant memory, and our brand-new lives together were absolutely wonderful.
Later that afternoon, during Lily's routine checkup at our new pediatrician, a friendly nurse with striking blue eyes gently took a standard blood sample.

As soon as we left the exam room, the smiling nurse locked the door and pulled out a dark, encrypted burner phone.
She quickly typed a highly coded message to an unknown international number, stating that the true Vance heir had been successfully located and the parents suspected absolutely nothing.
