Chapter 7 - The Mastermind Revealed

The brutal impact of the bullets threw Ethan violently backward, driving both of us hard onto the cold tile floor.
I screamed his name in absolute terror as a dark pool of blood immediately began spreading beneath his leather jacket.
I grabbed his heavy collar and dragged him desperately behind a massive steel surgical table for cover.
Bullets ricocheted wildly off the thick metal, sending bright, hot sparks flying dangerously into the air above our heads.
Ethan violently gritted his teeth and pressed his hand incredibly hard against the bleeding gunshot wound in his side.
He suddenly pulled a small, silver handgun from his waistband that I never even knew he carried.
He blind-fired three rapid shots over the edge of the table, taking down one of the tactical guards instantly.
The momentary pause in the heavy gunfire gave us just enough precious time to scramble toward an adjacent medical supply closet.
We shoved ourselves frantically inside and slammed the heavy reinforced door shut, quickly throwing the thick steel deadbolt.
I frantically tore my hospital shirt into long strips and pressed them hard against Ethan's heavily bleeding wound.
He gasped painfully for air, his skin turning dangerously pale under the flickering, cheap fluorescent light.
He begged me to leave him behind to die and use the overhead air vent to find our missing daughter.
I absolutely refused to ever leave my husband to bleed out in this dirty, freezing closet.
Heavy, deliberate footsteps approached our door, followed by a loud, incredibly mocking knock from the other side.
Julian's muffled voice filtered through the wood, but the cadence sounded distinctly and terrifyingly different now.
He laughed a deep, booming laugh and asked if Ethan had finally figured out the real truth yet.
Ethan closed his eyes in ultimate defeat and whispered that Julian really did die in that foreign prison ten years ago.
The mysterious man outside kicked the heavy door so hard the metal frame instantly began to buckle inward.
The thick wood splintered violently as the aggressive intruder successfully forced his way into the tiny room.
I stared in absolute, paralyzing shock at the man confidently holding the heavy assault weapon.

It wasn't Ethan's twin brother standing there at all.
It was Dr. Evans, the very same trusted obstetrician who had delivered my beautiful baby just yesterday afternoon.
