Chapter 8 - The Price of a Life

Dr. Evans stood proudly in the ruined doorway, peeling a hyper-realistic silicone mask completely off his sweating face.
He casually tossed the fake, molded features of Ethan's dead brother onto the bloody floor in sheer disgust.
He calmly explained that Victoria Vance had paid him five million dollars to orchestrate this highly theatrical kidnapping.
She generously provided the expensive mask and the trained mercenaries so the local police would hunt a ghost instead of investigating her.
But the incredibly greedy doctor realized very quickly that the sole heir to the Vance empire was worth far more than his initial payout.
He aimed his heavy weapon directly at my forehead, his hand remaining completely and terrifyingly steady.
He tossed a sleek black digital tablet casually onto the floor right next to Ethan's bloody hands.
Dr. Evans demanded that Ethan access his highly secretive offshore accounts and transfer fifty million dollars immediately.
He swore that if the massive wire transfer went through smoothly, he would kindly tell us which locked room held our daughter.
Ethan coughed up a terrifying amount of blood, his wildly shaking fingers typing his complex passwords onto the glowing screen.
I begged the corrupt doctor to just let us hold our innocent baby, desperately promising we would never go to the police.
Dr. Evans just smiled a chilling, entirely empty smile and kept the deadly gun trained aggressively on my face.
The digital tablet chimed loudly and cheerfully, clearly indicating the massive international wire transfer was completely successful.
Ethan dropped the heavy device onto the floor, staring up at the corrupt doctor with pure, unadulterated hatred.
He angrily demanded to know exactly where our newborn daughter was hidden in this massive building.
Dr. Evans checked his own encrypted phone to carefully confirm the massive deposit had fully cleared his offshore bank account.
He slowly raised his heavy weapon again, the dark metallic silencer glinting sharply under the dim closet light.
He casually mentioned that he absolutely never intended to leave any loose ends breathing in this clinic.

He smoothly pulled the heavy metal trigger without blinking.
A deafening, explosive gunshot echoed violently through the tiny room, spattering the white wall behind me in dark red.
