Chapter 8 - The Night Visitor

The exhausted detective looked at me with deep, genuine sympathy in his eyes.

He informed me that my mother had already made bail an hour ago.

David had used his extensive legal connections to get her released immediately from the local precinct.

The detective also said they could not locate my brother or my son anywhere in the city.

They had completely abandoned their registered home addresses and fled the jurisdiction.

I felt a cold panic rise in my throat as I realized they were running away with my baby.

Sarah gripped my hand tightly and told me to calm down and think exactly like David.

She reminded me that David was deeply obsessed with his public image and hoarded wealth.

He would never hide in a cheap motel or leave the country without securing his assets first.

I closed my eyes and tried to remember a list of his secret real estate properties.

Then, I remembered the private hunting cabin he had bought through a shell corporation last year.

It was located deep in the dense mountains, three hours away from the city limits.

I told the detective the exact address, and he immediately dispatched state troopers to the area.

I completely refused to wait safely in the hospital while my son was in mortal danger.

Sarah firmly insisted I go, promising me she was perfectly safe under armed police protection now.

I drove out into the dark, mountainous roads as a heavy, blinding rainstorm began to fall.

The winding dirt path leading up to the remote cabin was incredibly slick with mud and treacherous.

My bright headlights cut through the darkness, illuminating the dense pine forest.

When I finally reached the clearing, I saw David’s luxury SUV parked crookedly outside the cabin.

The heavy wooden front door of the cabin was standing wide open to the wind.

I grabbed a heavy metal flashlight from my trunk and ran inside cautiously.

The cabin was completely empty, and the back glass window was totally shattered.

A fresh trail of muddy footprints led directly toward the raging, flooded river behind the property.
