Chapter 1 - The Secret on the Screen

I looked down at the glowing screen of my wife's phone.
My heart completely stopped beating in my chest.
Sarah’s trembling fingers had opened her sent messages folder.
The most recent message was sent to her primary care doctor just ten minutes ago.
I had been standing in line at the pharmacy during that exact time.
The message claimed that Sarah was experiencing severe postpartum psychosis.
It falsely stated that she wanted to drown our newborn son in the bathtub.
It begged the doctor to send authorities to take the baby away for his own safety.
My mother had typed this horrific lie using Sarah’s phone while my wife was too weak to fight back.
I slowly raised my eyes to look at the woman who had raised me.
She was standing by the kitchen island with a cold, calculated smirk on her face.
She thought she had already won the war.
She truly believed I would side with her and institutionalize my recovering wife.
I handed the phone back to Sarah and took a deep, shaky breath.
I pulled out my own phone and immediately dialed emergency services.
My mother’s confident smirk vanished instantly.
She stepped forward and demanded to know who I was calling.
I told her I was calling the police to report a home invasion and medical tampering.
Her face turned deathly pale.
She lunged toward me to grab my phone out of my hand.
I shoved her back firmly with one arm, shielding my wife and child behind me.
Before the emergency dispatcher could even answer, a loud, sudden knock echoed from our front door.

The police were already here.
My mother had called them before I even returned from the pharmacy.
