Chapter 3 - The Lethal Dose

The silence in the living room was deafening.

The police officers immediately turned their sharp attention away from my wife.

They stared at my mother, who was suddenly trembling violently.

She stammered that she simply grabbed the wrong bottle by mistake.

I yelled that she had deliberately swapped my wife's medication to kill her.

The paramedic quickly moved to Sarah's side to check her vital signs.

He warned us that her blood pressure was dropping dangerously low.

The extreme stress of the confrontation was causing her surgical wounds to rupture.

A dark red stain began to spread rapidly across the blanket covering my wife's lap.

I dropped to my knees and held her cold, shaking hand.

The paramedic called for an emergency transport and grabbed a trauma kit from his bag.

One of the police officers pulled out his metal handcuffs and approached my mother.

She screamed and fought wildly as he locked her wrists together behind her back.

She yelled that I was making the biggest mistake of my entire life.

I ignored her entirely, focusing only on my dying wife.

The ambulance sirens wailed loudly as they loaded Sarah onto a medical stretcher.

I carefully placed our newborn son into his car seat to follow them to the hospital.

As I walked past my mother, she looked at me with pure, unadulterated venom.

She whispered that she had already filed the necessary paperwork anyway.

I stopped walking and stared at her.

I asked her what she was talking about.

She smiled wickedly and told me to check the county family court docket.

She had filed for emergency permanent custody of my son two days ago.

Her signature was not the only one on the legal petition.
