Chapter 2 - The Wellness Check

The heavy pounding on the door made the baby start screaming again.

I walked over and pulled the heavy wooden door open.

Two police officers and a paramedic stood on my front porch.

My mother immediately pushed past me and started sobbing hysterically.

She told the officers that her daughter-in-law was a violent danger to the baby.

She pointed at the crushed pill on the counter as her fake proof.

She claimed Sarah was abusing her pain medication and threatening to hurt everyone.

The taller officer placed a hand on his holster and stepped cautiously into the living room.

He looked at my wife, who was pale, bleeding, and clutching our crying newborn.

The officer sternly ordered Sarah to hand the baby over to my mother.

I stepped directly between the armed officer and my terrified wife.

I stated clearly that my mother had stolen Sarah's phone and falsified a medical emergency.

My mother screamed that I was blinded by a manipulative addict.

The paramedic ignored the shouting and walked over to inspect the crushed pill.

He scooped some of the white powder onto his gloved finger and examined it closely.

His expression suddenly shifted from professional concern to absolute horror.

He sharply asked my mother exactly where she got the pill bottle.

My mother proudly stated she took it from Sarah's nightstand to protect the baby.

The paramedic looked at me with wide, panicked eyes.

He said these were absolutely not painkillers.

He identified the crushed powder as a dangerously high dose of a prescription blood thinner.

Sarah was already recovering from a severe postpartum hemorrhage.

If she had swallowed that powder, she would have bled to death in minutes.

My mother had just attempted murder.
