Chapter 10 - The Final Rescue

I threw myself into the freezing, violent rapids without a single second of hesitation.

The icy water forcefully knocked the breath out of my lungs, but pure adrenaline kept me moving forward.

I swam desperately through the churning current, keeping my eyes locked on the bobbing plastic carrier.

I reached out blindly, my frozen fingers scraping against the handle just as it tipped precariously over a rock.

I grabbed the handle firmly and pulled the heavy carrier securely against my chest.

I fought the aggressive current, kicking my way toward a shallow gravel bank near the edge of the river.

I collapsed onto the wet stones, tearing the protective cover off the carrier to check my son.

He was crying loudly, completely terrified, but miraculously dry and completely unharmed.

I held him tightly against my face, weeping openly with sheer relief in the pouring rain.

State troopers arrived moments later, their bright flashlights illuminating the entire muddy riverbank.

They pulled my mother out of the water further downstream and immediately placed her in heavy iron handcuffs.

David surrendered without a fight, collapsing to his knees in the mud as they loudly read him his rights.

The terrifying nightmare was finally over for good.

A week later, Sarah and I happily brought our healthy son back to a newly furnished, highly secure home.

My mother and brother were permanently denied bail, facing decades in federal prison for conspiracy and attempted murder.

Sarah recovered beautifully from her ordeal, her strength completely returning as we focused entirely on loving our child.

We finally had the lasting peace and absolute safety our little family truly deserved.

I casually walked out to the front porch one morning to pick up a package left by the mail carrier.

It was a small, unmarked wooden box with absolutely no return address on the label.

I opened the lid and found a silver baby rattle resting on a piece of dark velvet.

Beneath the rattle was a handwritten note that made my blood freeze solid.

The note read: "You handled your mother well, but you still owe me the child. - Your real father."
