Chapter 6 - The Empty House

I left the hospital waiting room and sprinted across the parking lot to my car.

Sarah was still in surgery, and the doctors had firmly promised to call me with any updates.

I drove recklessly through the rainy city streets to reach my house as fast as possible.

When I finally pulled into the driveway, the front door was standing wide open.

I rushed inside and found the living room completely empty.

The couch, the television, and the large dining table were all gone.

I ran upstairs to the nursery, my heart pounding painfully against my ribs.

The wooden crib, the changing table, and every single baby item had been stolen.

My mother and brother were trying to erase our existence to legally prove we had no home for a child.

They wanted the family court to see a completely empty house during the mandatory welfare check.

I stood in the center of the stripped nursery and screamed out loud in sheer frustration.

Then, I noticed a very small detail they had missed in their greedy rush to rob us.

The digital clock plugged into the wall outlet near the window was still there.

It was a hidden nanny camera I had purchased months ago but never mentioned to anyone.

I rushed over and quickly pulled the tiny memory card from the back of the plastic clock.

I plugged it into my laptop, praying desperately that the internal battery had kept it recording.

The high-definition footage from earlier that afternoon loaded onto the bright screen.

I watched the video of my mother crushing the pills by the kitchen sink.

But the camera captured something else that made me stop breathing entirely.

My mother had not been alone in the house before I arrived from the pharmacy.

She was clearly seen handing a thick stack of cash to the hospital nurse who had discharged Sarah.
