Chapter 4 - The Forged Signature

I rode in the front seat of the speeding ambulance, my mind racing with absolute terror.

Sarah was unconscious in the back, receiving emergency intravenous fluids.

Our baby slept peacefully in his car seat beside me, entirely unaware of the nightmare.

As soon as we arrived at the emergency room, the trauma doctors rushed Sarah straight into surgery.

I sat alone in the sterile waiting room, clutching the baby’s heavy diaper bag.

I pulled out my phone and quickly logged into the county court records database.

My hands shook violently as I typed in my own last name.

The search results populated instantly on the glowing screen.

My mother had indeed filed an emergency custody petition to take my son.

The legal document claimed that both Sarah and I were unfit parents due to severe substance abuse.

I scrolled down to the bottom of the digital document to see the official signatures.

My mother’s signature was there, legally notarized and stamped by a court clerk.

The secondary petitioner's signature made my blood run entirely cold.

It was the signature of my older brother, David.

David was a highly respected family law attorney in our city.

He knew exactly how to manipulate the legal system to bypass standard child welfare protocols.

He had used his prestigious legal credentials to expedite a secret emergency custody hearing.

A heavy hand suddenly clamped down hard on my shoulder.

I turned around to see David standing right behind me in the hospital waiting room.

He was wearing a tailored suit and holding a thick manila envelope.

He did not even ask how Sarah was doing in surgery.

He simply handed me the envelope and looked down at the sleeping baby.

He told me I was legally required to surrender the child to him immediately.
