Chapter 9 - The Standoff

The tactical officers froze immediately, their assault rifles remaining perfectly trained on Aaron’s head.
The cold steel of the scalpel pressed dangerously hard against my skin, drawing a tiny bead of warm blood.
"You have absolutely nowhere to go, Dr. Mitchell," the lead negotiator stated calmly from behind a ballistic shield.
"We already raided the underground facility and arrested your mother."
Aaron’s grip on my hair tightened violently as a look of pure, unadulterated madness crossed his face.
"Sylvia is innocent, you do not understand the science!" he screamed desperately at the armed men.
My body was suddenly wracked by the most powerful contraction yet, forcing a completely uncontrollable scream from my lungs.
The sudden, violent movement of my body caught Aaron entirely off guard for a split second.
The scalpel slipped slightly away from my major artery, giving the tactical team a tiny, microscopic window of opportunity.
"Take the shot!" the commander roared loudly over the chaos.
A single, suppressed gunshot cracked sharply through the tense, humid air of the operating room.
Aaron’s eyes went completely wide as a blooming red stain instantly appeared on his left shoulder.
He dropped the scalpel entirely, stumbling backward and crashing heavily into a tray of surgical instruments.
Officers swarmed him immediately, pinning him brutally to the floor and locking heavy steel cuffs around his wrists.
"Get the medical team in here right now, the hostage is in active labor!" an officer yelled frantically into his radio.
Two trauma nurses and a new doctor rushed through the smoke-filled doorway, practically ignoring the arrested criminal on the floor.
They quickly sliced through the heavy leather restraints binding my wrists and ankles.
"Push, Anna, you have to push with everything you have right now!" the new doctor commanded loudly.
I gripped the metal side rails of the table, screaming loudly as I pushed with every remaining ounce of strength in my exhausted body.
The pain was absolutely blinding, a terrifying crescendo of pressure that felt like it would tear me completely apart.
"One more time, the head is out!" the nurse encouraged, wiping sweat frantically from my forehead.
I closed my eyes and gave one final, desperate push, pushing until all the oxygen completely left my lungs.
The sudden release of pressure was immediately followed by the most beautiful, miraculous sound in the entire world.
My baby began to cry loudly, his tiny voice easily echoing over the chaos of the police raid.

But as the doctor held my son up, his expression suddenly shifted to one of complete, utter horror.
"Oh my god," the doctor whispered, staring down at my newborn baby.
