Chapter 10 - The New Dawn

"What is wrong?" I screamed frantically, trying desperately to sit up on the blood-soaked table.

The doctor quickly cut the umbilical cord and wrapped my crying son tightly in a warm, sterile blanket.

"He is perfectly healthy, Anna," the doctor finally breathed, his voice shaking with sheer disbelief.

"But the synthetic parasite attached to the placenta just completely disintegrated into ash the moment he was born."

I collapsed back against the pillows, sobbing uncontrollably in pure, unadulterated relief and joy.

The nightmare was finally, completely over, and my beautiful baby boy had miraculously survived the ordeal.

Over the next several weeks, the entire twisted conspiracy fully unraveled under federal investigation.

Dr. Reed survived her gunshot wound and testified brilliantly against Aaron, presenting all the hidden genetic evidence to the court.

Aaron and his corrupt colleagues were stripped of their medical licenses and sentenced to multiple consecutive life terms in federal prison.

Sylvia, denied her twisted genetic cure, was transferred to a secure prison hospital to live out her final, miserable days.

I was granted full, undisputed custody of my son, moving back to my childhood home where my loving parents surrounded us with absolute safety.

We named him Leo, and he grew stronger and more perfect with every passing, peaceful day.

I finally felt like I could breathe again, completely free from the suffocating, terrifying shadow of my ex-husband's control.

It was a rainy Sunday evening when I carried a sleeping Leo upstairs to his beautifully painted nursery.

I gently laid him down in his wooden crib, softly humming a lullaby as I tucked a warm blanket around him.

As I pulled my hand away, Leo suddenly opened his eyes, and instead of his usual bright blue, his irises flashed a metallic, unnatural gold.

I gasped and stumbled backward, my heart dropping completely into my stomach as I bumped into the wooden dresser.

Sitting perfectly centered on the lace runner of the dresser was a freshly polished silver cup.

A small, handwritten note was neatly folded beneath it, reading: "Protection never truly ends, Anna."
