Chapter 8 - The Hostage

My eyelids felt incredibly heavy, refusing to open despite my desperate, internal struggle to wake up.

The rhythmic beeping of a heart monitor slowly pierced through the thick, terrifying fog in my brain.

I forced my eyes open, greeted by the blindingly bright surgical lights suspended directly above me.

My wrists and ankles were tightly restrained by heavy leather straps to a cold, steel operating table.

I turned my head weakly and saw Aaron standing beside me, fully scrubbed in for major surgery.

"You made this entirely too difficult, Anna," Aaron sighed, adjusting his surgical mask with sterile gloves.

"We could have done this comfortably at home, but now I have to perform an emergency extraction in a restricted wing."

I tried to scream for help, but my throat was painfully dry and heavily paralyzed by the drugs.

He picked up a gleaming silver scalpel, admiring the sharp edge under the bright overhead lights.

"The enzyme that traitorous doctor injected damaged the parasite," Aaron explained casually, as if discussing the weather.

"I have to remove the baby immediately, harvest the remaining stem cells directly from his spinal cord, and transplant them to my mother."

Tears of absolute despair rolled down my cheeks as I realized he was going to murder my newborn son right in front of me.

I thrashed weakly against the thick leather restraints, but they were entirely completely unforgiving.

Aaron positioned the scalpel directly over my swollen stomach, his eyes totally devoid of any human empathy.

"I really did love you, Anna, but family must always come first," he whispered coldly.

Before he could make the first incision, a massive, deafening explosion rocked the entire hospital wing.

The heavy surgical doors were violently blown completely off their metal hinges.

Thick, gray smoke poured aggressively into the sterile operating room, triggering the automated sprinkler system.

Aaron stumbled backward in shock, dropping the sharp scalpel onto the wet, slippery floor.

Through the dense smoke, a heavily armed tactical police unit rushed into the room with laser sights completely illuminating Aaron’s chest.

"Drop your weapons and put your hands on your head!" a commanding voice roared through a megaphone.

I sobbed in profound relief, realizing Dr. Reed must have managed to survive and contact the authorities with her evidence.

But Aaron did not surrender to the overwhelming police force.

He swiftly snatched the fallen scalpel from the floor and grabbed my hair aggressively, pulling my head backward.

He pressed the razor-sharp blade directly against my throat, his eyes wide with desperate, manic panic.

"Anyone takes another step, and I slice her jugular right now!" Aaron screamed wildly.
