Chapter 2 - The Escape

The driver twisted my arm violently behind my back, forcing me to drop to my knees on the hot asphalt.

Dr. Reed did not freeze in panic like I expected her to.

She reached into her oversized medical bag and pulled out a heavy steel oxygen tank.

With a fierce cry, she swung the heavy cylinder directly into the driver’s face.

The man collapsed instantly, his grip on my mouth vanishing as he hit the ground completely unconscious.

"Get in the car, Anna!" she ordered, tossing the heavy tank aside and jumping into the driver’s seat.

I scrambled into the passenger side, locking the door just as Aaron burst out of the clinic’s back exit.

His pristine white coat was now covered in dark soot and shattered safety glass.

He locked eyes with me through the windshield, his expression twisting into a mask of pure, unadulterated rage.

Dr. Reed slammed her foot onto the gas pedal, and the tires shrieked as we sped out of the narrow alley.

I looked back over my shoulder and watched Aaron pull a heavy black firearm from his waistband.

"He has a gun!" I screamed, ducking my head below the dashboard.

A loud pop echoed through the air, and the rear window shattered into thousands of tiny, sparkling fragments.

Dr. Reed swerved sharply onto the main highway, weaving aggressively through the dense morning traffic to break his line of sight.

My chest heaved as I struggled to draw enough oxygen into my lungs.

"What did you see on the ultrasound?" I begged, my voice trembling uncontrollably.

Dr. Reed kept her eyes locked on the road, her knuckles turning entirely white against the steering wheel.

"The injections your husband gave you were not vitamins, Anna," she began, her voice tight with fear.

"They were a specialized immunosuppressant meant to keep your body from rejecting a foreign biological mass."

I stared at her in complete confusion, my hands tightly clutching my swollen stomach.

"There is a synthetic, secondary umbilical cord attached to your baby," she confessed.

"It is actively siphoning your child's stem cells and feeding them into an artificial sac implanted near your liver."

The sheer horror of her words made the entire world spin violently around me.

Before I could process the monstrous violation of my own body, a sharp, agonizing pain ripped through my lower abdomen.

I looked down and gasped as a dark red stain began rapidly spreading across my hospital gown.
