Chapter 6 - The Mother-In-Law

I spun around in absolute terror, my heart violently hammering against my ribs.
Sylvia struck a match, the tiny, flickering flame illuminating her pale, hollow face in the darkness of the closet.
She calmly lit a small kerosene lantern resting on her lap, bathing the tiny room in an eerie, yellowish glow.
In her frail hands, she held the exact same polished silver cup from the clinic entrance.
"You really thought you could hide from my son in a facility he secretly funded?" Sylvia chuckled, her breathing ragged and weak.
I pressed myself flat against the door, desperately listening for any sign of Dr. Reed surviving the gunshot in the hallway.
There was nothing but absolute, terrifying silence outside.
"Drink this, Anna," Sylvia commanded, holding the cup of thick, crimson liquid toward me with a trembling hand.
"It will reverse the enzyme damage your foolish doctor just caused to my new organs."
I shook my head fiercely, completely disgusted by the twisted monster sitting in front of me.
"You are insane," I spat out, my protective instincts flaring up to defend my unborn child.
Sylvia sighed heavily, her polite facade dropping to reveal the desperate, dying creature underneath.
She suddenly stood up from the wheelchair with terrifying speed, proving her frailty was entirely an act.
She grabbed my throat with surprising, iron-like strength, violently pinning me back against the heavy wooden door.
"I will not die just because a common incubator wants to play mother!" she shrieked, forcing the silver cup toward my lips.
The metallic smell of blood and strange chemicals invaded my nostrils, making my stomach heave.
I reached blindly behind me, my fingers frantically searching the nearby supply shelf for any kind of weapon.
My hand closed around a heavy glass bottle of surgical iodine.
I swung it forward with every ounce of strength I had left, smashing it directly against the side of Sylvia's head.
The glass shattered completely, and the dark brown liquid splashed across her face as she collapsed backward with a furious scream.
The silver cup clattered loudly onto the floor, its horrific contents spilling over the concrete.
I yanked the closet door open and practically fell into the dark hallway, desperate to escape.
Before I could even take a single step toward freedom, my water broke in a massive, undeniable gush of warm fluid.

A contraction so powerful it dropped me instantly to my knees tore through my abdomen.
I looked up through tears of pure agony and saw Aaron standing at the end of the hallway, aiming his gun directly at my head.
