Chapter 9 - The Decoy

I dropped my pistol onto the concrete floor and kicked it far away from my reach.
Vance hesitated for a fraction of a second, but I sharply ordered him to stand down and drop his weapon too.
Harland’s malicious laughter echoed over the roaring flames of the massive industrial furnace.
He kept his gun pressed firmly against Nora’s tiny head, her big brown eyes filled with silent, terrified tears.
Harland tossed a heavy leather binder onto the floor between us.
He demanded I sign the transfer documents inside, which would legally grant him full ownership of my multi-billion-dollar shipping empire.
If I signed away my entire legacy, he promised to let the little girl walk out of the room alive.
I did not even look at the documents as I dropped to my knees and picked up his expensive pen.
I signed my name on every single dotted line, completely surrendering everything I had built from nothing.
I slid the binder back toward his polished leather shoes and demanded he release Nora immediately.
Harland picked up the binder, verifying my signatures with a greedy, victorious gleam in his eyes.
He shoved Nora roughly toward me, and she ran directly into my waiting, protective arms.
Then, Harland looked at the ink-stained white shirt in his left hand and smiled wickedly.
He flicked the heavy silver lighter open, ignited the flame, and set the fabric completely on fire.
He tossed the burning shirt into the blazing incinerator, destroying the master ledger and all evidence of his crimes forever.
Harland gloated that he had finally won, and I was going to spend the rest of my life in a federal prison.
I held Nora tightly against my chest, making sure she was entirely unharmed.
Then, I looked up at Harland, and a slow, genuine smile spread across my face.
I told him that he was incredibly smart, but he had severely underestimated the brilliance of a mother's love.
I gently reached up and touched the small, pink plastic barrette clipping Nora’s hair back.

The burning shirt in the furnace was just a clever, meaningless decoy designed to attract his attention.
Elena had actually hidden the real micro-SD card containing the ledger inside her daughter's hair clip.
