Chapter 7 - The Master Ledger

My mind raced as I processed the staggering revelation about the woman I thought was just a housekeeper.
Elena had intentionally spilled ink on that specific white dress shirt to smuggle the digital key out of Harland’s office.
She had sewn a microscopic, waterproof SD card deep into the thick fabric of the collar.
When she suddenly collapsed from Harland’s poison, she couldn't retrieve the shirt from the laundry basket.
Nora had unknowingly grabbed the most dangerous piece of evidence in the world, thinking she was just doing a chore.
I closed my eyes in frustration, realizing that the wet shirt was still sitting in the puddle on my laundry room floor.
Victor finished suturing my bullet wound, warning me that any sudden movements could tear the stitches open.
I ignored his medical advice, pulling my blood-stained shirt over my head and preparing to fight.
We had to get back into that mansion and retrieve the collar before Harland realized what it contained.
Suddenly, Vance pointed toward the large television monitor mounted on the warehouse wall.
Every major news network was interrupting their broadcast with a breaking emergency alert.
Harland’s face appeared on the screen, looking battered and bruised from his encounter with Vance.
He was standing at a police podium next to the corrupt captain who had raided my house.
Harland falsely claimed to the press that I was a deranged criminal who had shot him and kidnapped an innocent child.
He announced that federal authorities had officially frozen all of my global assets and bank accounts.
I was now a penniless, highly dangerous fugitive hunted by every law enforcement agency in the country.
Harland stared directly into the news camera, a wicked, knowing smile creeping across his face.
He held up a clear plastic evidence bag for the world to see.
Inside the bag was my wet, ink-stained white dress shirt.
He announced that he was going to personally destroy my belongings in the estate's incinerator to cleanse the property of my evil.

It was a direct, terrifying message aimed straight at me.
He had the ledger, and he was daring me to come and stop him before it burned.
