Chapter 1 - The Hidden Enemy

I wrapped Nora’s tiny, freezing hand in a warm towel and held it gently in mine.

We walked down the long, dimly lit corridor toward my private study.

Every step I took felt heavier as the memories of my own traumatic childhood flooded my mind.

I had built this billionaire empire to ensure no one could ever make me feel powerless again.

Yet, a monster was operating freely under my own roof.

Harland had managed my estate for five years with absolute precision.

I paid him an exorbitant salary to ensure my home was a flawless sanctuary.

Instead, he was using his power to terrorize a desperate housekeeper and her three-year-old child.

I pushed the heavy oak doors of the study open without knocking.

Harland was sitting behind my mahogany desk, pouring himself a glass of my most expensive scotch.

He didn’t even flinch when I walked in.

He simply smiled and took a slow, arrogant sip.

I told him to pack his things and leave my property immediately.

Harland let out a cold, mocking laugh that echoed in the large room.

He set the crystal glass down and opened the top drawer of my desk.

He pulled out a thick manila folder and tossed it onto the polished wood.

He told me I couldn't fire him because he practically owned me now.

I stepped closer, shielding Nora behind my leg.

I demanded to know what he was talking about.

Harland sneered and pointed a finger at the little girl trembling behind me.

He said her mother didn't just catch a random flu virus this morning.

My blood ran completely cold as I realized what he was implying.

Harland smiled wickedly and confessed that he had poisoned Elena’s morning tea.

And if I didn't sign the documents in that folder, he would pour the only antidote down the drain.
