Chapter 8 - The Incinerator Room

I strapped a heavy tactical vest over my bandaged torso and loaded a matte-black pistol.
Victor warned me that breaking into my own mansion would be absolute suicide with the police surrounding it.
I told him I would rather die fighting for the truth than live as a coward in the shadows.
Vance refused to let me go alone, grabbing his own assault rifle and tossing me an extra magazine.
We left Elena and Victor at the safehouse to care for Nora, promising we would return before dawn.
We drove back to the estate, parking a mile away and navigating the dense woods in total darkness.
We used a forgotten drainage pipe to bypass the heavy police presence swarming the front gates.
We infiltrated the mansion through the basement utility grates, moving silently past the corrupt officers patrolling the halls.
I knew Harland wouldn't destroy the evidence in front of the authorities.
He would take it to the soundproof industrial incinerator hidden in the sub-basement of the estate.
Vance and I crept down the spiral metal staircase, the oppressive heat of the furnace washing over our faces.
The heavy steel door to the incinerator room was slightly ajar, casting an orange glow into the dark hallway.
I kicked the door open and raised my weapon, ready to end Harland’s reign of terror once and for all.
Harland was standing in front of the roaring fire, holding the white dress shirt in one hand and a heavy lighter in the other.
But he was not alone in the sweltering room.
Standing right beside him, shivering in fear with a cold metal pistol pressed against her temple, was little Nora.
My heart completely stopped in my chest.
Harland laughed at my absolute horror, explaining that his men had intercepted Victor's safehouse just ten minutes ago.
He had captured the little girl specifically to ensure my total surrender.

Harland ordered me to drop my weapon and kick it away, or Nora would not survive the night.
I slowly lowered my pistol, realizing he had just successfully checkmated my entire life.
