Chapter 2 - The Ghost in the Rain

Norah dropped the burner phone onto the wet concrete as if it had burned her hand.

She backed away into the shadows of the alley, her mind racing with pure terror.

Someone had found Marcus before she did.

She knew Nico was powerful, but he could not have traced a burner phone that quickly.

She turned around and began running blindly through the labyrinth of narrow streets.

Meanwhile, Nico was tearing the South Side apart.

His men were kicking in the doors of every motel and bus station in the district.

Arthur sat in the passenger seat of the armored car, watching Nico spiral into madness.

Arthur quietly suggested that Norah might have been working for a rival family all along.

Nico slammed on the brakes and pressed his pistol directly against Arthur's throat.

He swore he would blow his underboss's head off if he ever disrespected her name again.

Arthur slowly raised his hands in surrender, but a dark glint appeared in his old eyes.

Norah finally stopped running when she reached an abandoned subway entrance.

She crouched behind a rusted metal dumpster to catch her breath.

The sound of heavy boots splashing through the puddles echoed from the street corner.

Three massive men in tactical gear stepped into the dim light of the streetlamp.

They were not wearing the tailored suits of Nico's mafia syndicate.

They were carrying suppressed rifles and fanning out to search the alleyway.

Norah tried to crawl backward into the darkness of the subway stairwell.

A cold, gloved hand suddenly clamped tightly over her mouth from the shadows behind her.
