Chapter 5 - The Burning Truth

Thick black smoke began to filter rapidly into the underground wine cellar.

Elias turned on the flashlight application on his phone to illuminate the dusty room.

Rows of expensive vintage wine bottles lined the stone walls from floor to ceiling.

Maya rushed toward a hidden wall safe concealed behind a massive wooden wine rack.

She quickly entered a complex numerical combination to unlock the heavy steel door.

The safe clicked open to reveal a small silver flash drive resting on a velvet pillow.

This drive contained irrefutable proof of Richard's money laundering and assassination plots.

Maya carefully placed the precious drive into the secure pocket of her uniform.

The ceiling above them groaned loudly as the intense fire weakened the structural support beams.

Elias grabbed her hand and led her toward a narrow stone tunnel at the back of the cellar.

He explained that the tunnel was an old prohibition era escape route that led to the city sewer system.

They navigated the damp and terrifyingly dark passageway as the restaurant burned above them.

They eventually emerged from a rusted manhole cover into a deserted alleyway two blocks away.

The night sky was glowing bright orange from the massive inferno consuming the steakhouse.

Maya pulled the silver flash drive from her pocket to inspect it under the flickering streetlights.

She realized with absolute horror that the metal casing was slightly bent out of shape.

The brutal kick Richard had delivered to her chest earlier had severely damaged the fragile device.

She quickly plugged the drive into her encrypted smartphone to test the vital data connection.

The phone screen flashed red and displayed a critical security warning.

The physical damage had triggered a failsafe mechanism that locked the files behind a biometric firewall.

Maya stared at the screen as a sinking feeling settled deeply into her stomach.

The biometric lock required a highly specific physical key to bypass the complex encryption.

She looked up at Elias with tears of sheer frustration forming in her tired eyes.

"The only way to unlock this drive is with my late father's retinal scan," she whispered.

Elias asked how that was even remotely possible since her father had been dead for five years.

May you like

Maya revealed that her father had legally stored a digital retinal copy in a private vault.

"The vault is located inside Richard's heavily guarded penthouse apartment," she said grimly.
