Chapter 3 - The Lethal Deadlock
A wave of sheer terror swept through the elegant dining room.
Guests began screaming and rushing wildly toward the main exit doors.
The heavy glass doors suddenly locked shut with a loud mechanical click.
Richard had activated a remote override system that sealed the entire building.
The panicked crowd slammed their fists against the reinforced glass to no avail.
Maya stood her ground calmly despite the explosive threat in her uncle's hand.
She knew that showing fear would only give Richard the psychological advantage he craved.
Elias stepped protectively in front of Maya while keeping his eyes locked on the detonator.
"You will die in here with us if you press that button," Elias warned him quietly.
Richard laughed like a madman who had nothing left to lose.
He explained that his helicopter was already waiting on the roof of the adjacent building.
He just needed to walk out the back door while leaving everyone else trapped inside the bomb.
A man sitting alone at a corner table suddenly stood up and dropped his napkin.
He was dressed in a simple brown coat and had been quietly eating his steak the entire time.
The stranger reached beneath his coat and pulled out a standard issue police firearm.
"Federal Bureau of Investigation," the man shouted loudly over the screaming crowd.
He pointed his weapon directly at Richard's chest and ordered him to drop the device.
Richard did not flinch at the sight of the federal agent.
He confidently told the agent that a single bullet would cause his thumb to slip and trigger the blast.
The agent kept his aim steady but hesitated to pull the trigger under the extreme pressure.
Maya realized that the standoff was perfectly designed to buy Richard enough time to escape.
She slowly reached behind her back and grabbed a heavy silver steak knife from a nearby table.
Richard demanded that the FBI agent unlock the front doors and throw away his weapon.
The agent slowly lowered his gun to comply with the dangerous demand.
