Chapter 1 - The Broken Silence

The serving tray crashed onto the hardwood floor before anyone dared to breathe.

Forks froze halfway to mouths.

Conversations dissolved into absolute silence.

Even the sizzling sounds from the open kitchen seemed to vanish beneath the metallic echo rolling through the elegant steakhouse.

A young waitress lay on the floor beside the overturned tray.

She wore a simple black and white uniform.

Her dark hair was neatly tied back.

Her expression remained remarkably calm despite the sharp pain spreading across her chest.

A faint scrape reddened her forehead where it had struck the edge of the metal tray.

Only moments earlier she had approached a table with nothing more than an apology.

The premium steak ordered by the guest had taken longer than expected.

She had not come to argue.

She had not come to make excuses.

She had simply come to apologize personally.

The man seated at the center table was not interested in apologies.

A wealthy executive dressed in a tailored gray suit slammed both hands onto the white tablecloth.

The violent impact sent expensive wine glasses trembling.

When the waitress bowed her head slightly he completely exploded.

He stood up so suddenly that nearby diners physically flinched.

He attacked her without any warning.

He drove a brutal kick directly into her chest.

She stumbled backward as the serving tray flew from her hands before she hit the polished floor.

The entire dining room gasped in collective horror.

The wealthy man stared down at her as though she were an inconvenience rather than a human being.

"Trash," he snapped viciously.

"I do not wait for steak."

No one moved to help her.

It was not because they agreed with his vile actions.

It was because moments of shocking cruelty often leave even good people completely paralyzed.

Richard Sterling wiped his expensive leather shoe on the white tablecloth as if cleaning off dirt.

He demanded that the manager come out immediately to fire the clumsy waitress.

The heavy wooden doors of the kitchen swung open before his words fully settled.

A tall man wearing a pristine chef coat stepped into the tense dining room.

This was Elias Vance who was the head chef and sole owner of the famous establishment.

Elias walked slowly toward the center table with a chilling sense of authority.

He did not offer a polite smile or an apology to the wealthy executive.

Elias looked directly into Richard's eyes and told him to leave the restaurant immediately.

Richard laughed arrogantly and pulled out a black credit card.

He threatened to buy the entire building by morning and throw Elias out onto the street.

Elias shook his head slowly as a cold smile formed on his lips.

"You cannot buy this building from me because I do not own the property," Elias stated quietly.

Richard scoffed and asked who he needed to write the massive check to.

The waitress on the floor slowly stood up and brushed the dust from her uniform.

May you like

She looked Richard dead in the eye with a terrifying intensity.

"You would have to write the check to me," she said clearly.
