Chapter 9 - The Ultimate Sacrifice

Diego saw the glint of the mercenary's knife through the thick, choking smoke of the tear gas.
He did not think about his wealth, his safety, or his own life in that terrifying fraction of a second.
Diego threw his body across the wooden crate, shielding Valentina just as the mercenary brought the blade down.
The sharp steel plunged deep into Diego's shoulder, causing him to let out a guttural shout of pain.
Marisol screamed, grabbing a heavy metal pipe from the floor and swinging it with all her might.
The pipe connected with the mercenary's head, sending him crashing unconscious to the concrete floor.
The SWAT team quickly neutralized the remaining threats, securing the warehouse and arresting Paulina's father.
Marisol dropped to her knees beside Diego, pressing her trembling hands against his bleeding wound.
"You saved her," Marisol sobbed, tears falling freely onto Diego's ruined expensive shirt.
Diego managed a weak, painful smile as he looked up at the woman he had never stopped loving.
"I should have saved you both four years ago," he whispered before his eyes rolled back and he passed out.
The paramedics rushed into the building, loading Diego onto a stretcher and speeding toward the best hospital in the city.
For three agonizing days, Marisol and Valentina sat in the sterile waiting room, praying for a miracle.
When Diego finally opened his eyes, he found Valentina sleeping peacefully on his uninjured chest.
Marisol was sitting by his bed, holding his hand with a quiet, unwavering devotion.
The nightmare was finally over, and the people who had tried to destroy them were locked behind bars.
