Chapter 4 - The Highest Bidder

Thorne froze completely, his finger hovering dangerously over the trigger of his rifle.

He slowly lowered his weapon, staring at the official gold seal stamped on the bottom of the document.

The other mercenaries looked at their commander in deep confusion, unsure of what to do next.

"Let me see that paper," Thorne demanded, his deep voice losing a fraction of its arrogant confidence.

Mark carefully slid the legal document across the marble counter.

Thorne picked it up and inspected the intricate signatures, realizing the terrifying truth immediately.

The boy was the sole heir to the global defense conglomerate that signed their massive paychecks.

"Stand down, weapons lowered," Thorne barked at his elite tactical team.

Sterling watched from the floor, his greedy mind rapidly calculating a new, highly illegal plan.

"Thorne, listen to me very carefully," Sterling whispered loudly, crawling toward the mercenary leader.

Thorne looked down at the pathetic bank manager with utter disgust.

"The boy's uncle hired you to retrieve him, right?" Sterling guessed correctly, wiping sweat from his forehead.

"The uncle promised you a huge bounty, but that boy has fifteen billion dollars sitting in a liquid account right now."

Thorne narrowed his eyes, clearly interested in the incredibly lucrative proposition.

"If you help me force the kid to transfer the funds, we can split the money and disappear forever," Sterling offered wickedly.

Thorne looked at his men, who all slowly began to raise their weapons back up with greedy smiles.

"Sorry, kid, but loyalty does not pay for private islands," Thorne said, aiming his gun directly at Mark's chest.

Suddenly, every single light in the massive bank completely shattered simultaneously.

Plunged into absolute darkness, a terrifyingly calm voice echoed from the ceiling vents.

"You really should have checked your retirement plan before betraying your true employer, Thorne," the unseen voice whispered.
