Chapter 9 - The Fall of Adrian Vale

The wail of dozens of police sirens instantly shattered the tense silence of the chapel.

Heavily armed federal agents in tactical gear smashed through the stained-glass windows and flooded the sanctuary.

The hitman cursed loudly, dropping his revolver and immediately raising his hands in surrender.

Adrian's face turned the color of ash as he realized the magnitude of his fatal mistake.

He turned and bolted toward the sacristy doors, desperately trying to escape his inevitable ruin.

Three FBI agents tackled him brutally to the polished marble floor, driving their knees into his back.

I walked slowly down the altar steps, my crimson dress flowing beautifully behind me.

I stopped right beside the man who had tormented me for nearly a decade.

Adrian looked up at me, his lip bleeding, his eyes wide with absolute disbelief and fury.

When the police snapped the heavy steel cuffs around his wrists, I leaned closer to his ear.

"Darling, this is only the first recording," I whispered softly.

Adrian laughed through his bloodied teeth, a desperate, unhinged sound.

"You think you won?" he spat, struggling against the federal agents.

"I transferred all the cartel money to an untraceable account this morning, you are still going to take the fall!"

I looked down at him with an expression of pure, icy pity.

"I am a forensic accountant, Adrian," I reminded him gently.

"I hacked your untraceable account three hours ago and sent every single penny back to the federal housing program."
