Chapter 4 - The Backup Drive

I stared at the black screen of my phone in absolute horror.

Adrian's cybersecurity team had somehow hacked my device and wiped my evidence remotely.

Elena grabbed my arm, urging me to run toward the exit before Adrian's men could trap us.

I refused to let him win and steal my life a second time.

"I always keep a backup," I whispered to my lawyer.

Three days ago, I had mailed a physical USB drive to the chapel's elderly audio technician.

The technician was a kind man whom Adrian had previously cheated out of a construction contract.

I slipped away from the pews and hurried up the narrow spiral staircase leading to the sound booth.

The heavy door to the AV room was slightly ajar, casting a sliver of light into the dark stairwell.

I pushed the door open, expecting to find the elderly technician preparing the wedding march.

Instead, the technician was lying unconscious on the floor, bleeding from a fresh wound on his forehead.

Standing over him was Adrian's massive head of security, slowly twisting a silencer onto his pistol.

The security guard looked up and smiled a terrifying, predatory smile.

"Mr. Vale said you might try to cause a scene," the massive man growled.
