Chapter 1 - The Cream-Colored Envelope

I stared at the wedding invitation resting on my kitchen counter.

The paper was thick, expensive, and embossed with gold lettering.

It announced the union of Adrian Vale and Vanessa Cole at Saint Bartholomew’s Chapel.

A handwritten note was tucked inside the pristine envelope.

It read, "Come see what a real wife looks like."

For eight years, Adrian had trained me to disappear and swallow my own voice.

He controlled my clothes, monitored my calls, and corrected my behavior with the back of his hand.

The first time he struck me, he cried afterward and begged for my forgiveness.

The last time, he simply smiled.

I was once a brilliant forensic accountant, but he forced me to quit because my intelligence threatened his fragile ego.

He filed for divorce, emptied our joint accounts, and forged my signature to steal my property.

I signed away the house and the company shares while Vanessa waited outside wearing my diamond earrings.

Adrian told me I was too weak to survive without him.

He did not know I had secretly copied the original ledgers before he locked me out of the company server.

I picked up my phone and called Elena Ruiz, a fierce litigation attorney known for dismantling fraudulent empires.

She arrived at my apartment an hour later to review the hidden financial files I had decrypted.

Elena looked at the glowing laptop screen and let out a sharp gasp.

I asked her what she had found hidden in the endless columns of numbers.

She looked up at me with genuine fear in her eyes.

"Adrian isn't just stealing money from federal housing programs," Elena whispered.

"He has been laundering millions for the Sinaloa cartel, and your signature is on the transfer documents."
