Chapter 5 - The Forest Run

The shrill whine of the surgical drill echoed terrifyingly off the sterile, stainless steel walls of the fake clinic.

Clara pulled aggressively against the heavy leather restraints binding her wrists, tears of absolute panic streaming down her face.

The cold woman leaned closer, her emotionless eyes completely devoid of any human empathy.

Suddenly, the fire alarm in the ceiling erupted with a deafening, ear-piercing shriek, flashing blinding strobe lights across the room.

Thick white smoke billowed aggressively through the air vents, instantly choking the clinic staff.

The heavy metal door kicked open, and Leo rushed inside wearing a stolen security uniform.

He swung a heavy fire extinguisher, striking the female doctor squarely in the chest and knocking her to the floor.

Leo quickly sliced through Clara’s leather restraints with a pocket knife, hauling her aggressively out of the hospital bed.

"I set the chemical supply room on fire, but we have to move right now!" Leo shouted over the deafening alarms.

Clara forced her weak, trembling legs to carry her, leaning heavily against Leo's strong shoulder for support.

They burst out of the emergency exit doors into a dense, freezing pine forest surrounded by high wire fences.

The clinic guards were already swarming the courtyard, unleashing three massive, barking security dogs into the tree line.

Clara stumbled over exposed tree roots, her bare feet bleeding from the sharp rocks hidden in the freezing mud.

"I can't run anymore, Leo, my legs are completely giving out," Clara sobbed, collapsing against a large oak tree.

Leo refused to leave her behind, scooping her entirely into his arms and sprinting fiercely through the dense underbrush.

They finally reached the edge of the high-speed interstate highway, entirely exhausted and covered in mud.

A massive, rusted commercial delivery truck was idling on the shoulder of the road, the driver stepping out to check a flat tire.

Leo begged the gruff driver for help, offering him a stolen gold watch in exchange for a safe ride into the city.

The driver greedily took the watch, motioning for them to hide quickly in the dark, empty cargo bay of the truck.

Clara finally caught her breath in the darkness, believing they had successfully escaped the nightmare.

Then, she heard the terrifying, distinct sound of a heavy steel padlock clicking securely into place on the outside of the cargo doors.
