Chapter 9 - The Sacrifice
"Mom!" I screamed, dropping to my knees beside her bleeding body.
I pressed both of my hands firmly against her chest, desperately trying to stop the massive flow of blood.
Mark instantly raised his weapon and fired three rapid shots into the Director's chest.
The evil mastermind collapsed against the wall, sliding down to the floor completely lifeless.
The FBI medics rushed into the room, gently pushing me aside to access my mother's wound.
"Her pulse is dropping extremely fast," one of the medics shouted frantically.
They quickly strapped an oxygen mask to her face and loaded her onto a portable stretcher.
I ran alongside the stretcher as they sprinted toward the emergency medical elevator.
"Please do not leave me," I sobbed, gripping her cold, pale hand as tightly as I could.
She looked up at me through half-closed eyes and smiled a weak, beautiful smile.
"You are my real daughter, Sarah," she whispered softly through the plastic mask.
"Never let anyone tell you otherwise."
She lost consciousness completely just as the elevator doors closed.
The next forty-eight hours were an absolute blur of police interrogations and hospital waiting rooms.
Mark stayed by my side the entire time, holding my hand and answering all the FBI's questions.
The Archangel Syndicate was entirely dismantled by the massive federal raid.
Their secret bank accounts were frozen, and their corrupt politicians were arrested on live television.
We were officially safe, but none of it mattered to me if my mother did not survive.
On the third morning, a military surgeon finally walked into the waiting room with a tired smile.
"The bullet missed her heart by less than an inch," the surgeon announced.
"She is going to make a full and complete recovery."
I collapsed into Mark's arms, crying tears of absolute, unfiltered joy.

The nightmare was officially over, and we had actually survived.
The FBI placed us into a highly secure, permanent witness protection program to ensure our total safety.
