Chapter 2 - The Traitor

I froze completely in my tracks.

The man I was supposed to marry next month was holding a weapon on my family.

"Mark, what are you doing?" I screamed in utter confusion.

His handsome face showed absolutely no emotion.

"I am sorry, Sarah, but my orders are to secure the asset," he replied coldly.

My mother did not look surprised at all.

"I knew you were a mole the day you proposed to her," my mother spat.

She slowly raised her hands in a gesture of surrender.

But as she raised her arms, her thumb pressed a hidden button on her digital wristwatch.

A high-pitched mechanical whine filled the dark concrete parking garage.

Suddenly, every single fluorescent light in the structure violently shattered.

Total darkness consumed the garage in an instant.

I heard Mark curse loudly as he fired a blind shot into the dark.

The bullet sparked against the concrete wall miles away from us.

My mother grabbed my hand and yanked me forcefully behind a concrete pillar.

She quickly pulled a set of strange, metallic car keys from her hospital gown.

She clicked the unlock button.

A massive, armored black SUV chirped to life a few spaces away.

"Get in the passenger seat and keep your head down," she whispered urgently.

We crawled across the dirty floor and slipped into the heavy vehicle.

My mother hotwired the ignition interface with terrifying speed.

The engine roared to life just as Mark and five other men in black suits surrounded the vehicle.

They raised their weapons and opened fire.

Bullets rained down on the windshield, but the thick bulletproof glass easily absorbed the impact.

My mother slammed her foot on the gas pedal.

The heavy SUV leaped forward, smashing directly through the wooden toll gate.

We sped out onto the busy city streets with a fleet of black sedans chasing closely behind us.

I looked over at the woman who had packed my school lunches for eighteen years.

"Who exactly are you?" I gasped.

She kept her eyes glued to the rearview mirror.

"Check the glove compartment," she commanded.

I popped the small compartment open with shaking hands.

Inside was a loaded military pistol and a passport with my face on it.

The passport had a completely different name printed underneath my photo.
