Chapter 10 - The New Beginning

Six months later, the terrifying memories of the hospital and the Syndicate felt like a distant nightmare.

We were relocated to a beautiful, quiet beachside town in sunny California.

Mark and I were finally married in a small, private ceremony right on the white sand.

My mother walked me down the aisle, looking completely healthy and radiant in a floral dress.

She had completely retired from her dangerous life of espionage and violence.

She spent her peaceful days painting landscapes and volunteering at the local animal shelter.

The government provided us with new identities and a generous stipend for helping them destroy the criminal empire.

I finally had the perfectly normal, happy family life I had always dreamed of.

We were safe, we were loved, and the darkness of our past was buried forever.

One quiet Sunday evening, I was sitting alone on the wooden porch of our new beach house.

The warm breeze felt wonderful as I reached up to push a stray strand of hair behind my ear.

That was when a sudden, sharp burning sensation flared across the inside of my left wrist.

I pulled back my sleeve and stared in absolute horror at my own pale skin.

A tiny blue flower was slowly beginning to bloom beneath the surface of my veins.
