Chapter 3 - The Getaway

"My real name is Agent 47, and I used to be their best cleaner," my mother confessed.

She violently swerved the heavy SUV through chaotic downtown traffic.

Horns blared all around us as ordinary drivers desperately tried to get out of our way.

"The blue flower is a genetic brand given to elite operatives of the Archangel Syndicate," she explained.

The black sedans behind us were aggressively closing the distance.

One of the pursuing vehicles pulled up alongside our passenger window.

A man leaned out of the moving car with a submachine gun.

"Shoot him, Sarah!" my mother yelled.

I stared at the loaded pistol in my lap with pure terror.

"I do not know how to shoot a gun!" I cried.

My mother cursed under her breath and slammed on the brakes.

The black sedan shot past us, completely missing its target.

She instantly spun the steering wheel, forcing our SUV into a sharp ninety-degree turn down a narrow alleyway.

Trash cans and wooden pallets exploded as we smashed through the cramped space.

"They control the hospitals, the police, and the local government," she said breathlessly.

"I tried to hide us in the suburbs, but that nurse must have been a deep-cover informant."

We burst out of the alleyway and onto a large suspension bridge crossing the city river.

I thought we had finally lost them.

Then a massive commercial dump truck pulled out from a side street and blocked the entire bridge.

My mother slammed on the brakes, but we were moving way too fast.

The black sedans suddenly appeared behind us, effectively trapping us on the bridge.

Mark stepped out of the lead vehicle with a smug smile on his face.

He raised a heavy grenade launcher and aimed it directly at our engine block.

"Hold your breath, sweetie," my mother whispered.

She slammed the gas pedal to the floor and turned the steering wheel sharply to the right.

The heavy SUV crashed violently through the steel guardrail of the bridge.

We plummeted over the edge, freefalling directly toward the raging, dark river below.
