Chapter 8 - The Uprising

A blaring, deafening siren suddenly replaced the terrible sound of the spinning bone saw.
Flashing red emergency lights bathed the surgical room in a chaotic, bloody glow.
The doctor stumbled backward in confusion, dropping the heavy saw onto the floor.
"What is going on with the power grid?" the Director yelled angrily into his communication radio.
Before anyone could answer, a massive explosion rocked the foundation of the underground facility.
The reinforced glass windows of the observation deck violently shattered outward.
A tactical squad of heavily armed men wearing FBI windbreakers swung through the broken windows on ropes.
They immediately opened fire, dropping the Syndicate guards with ruthless, perfect precision.
Mark suddenly pulled out his sidearm and shot the evil hospital doctor squarely in the chest.
The doctor collapsed instantly, the stolen bone saw skittering uselessly across the bloody tiles.
I stared in absolute shock as Mark quickly unlocked the heavy leather straps binding me to the table.
"I told you I was going to take you to the FBI," Mark yelled over the deafening gunfire.
He had actually double-crossed the Syndicate by secretly transmitting our flight coordinates to federal authorities.
He rushed over to the wall and used his security keycard to release my mother's chains.
My mother rubbed her bruised wrists and actually gave Mark an approving, respectful nod.
The FBI agents flooded the room, securing the perimeter and arresting the surviving scientists.
The Director realized his massive criminal empire was collapsing around him.
He pulled a hidden, gold-plated revolver from inside his tailored jacket.
With a look of pure, unhinged hatred, he aimed the barrel directly at my head.
"If I cannot have the cure, nobody can!" the Director screamed maniacally.
He squeezed the trigger without a single second of hesitation.
I froze, knowing I could not possibly dodge the bullet in time.
But my mother dove fiercely across the surgical table, throwing her body directly into the line of fire.

The gunshot echoed loudly, and a bright bloom of crimson exploded across her chest.
She collapsed heavily onto the cold floor, gasping desperately for air.
