Chapter 5 - Subject Zero

The blaring alarm echoed painfully through the underground concrete bunker.

I stared at the woman I had called my mother for my entire life.

"They bred you in a laboratory to be the perfect biological weapon," she confessed quickly.

"Your DNA contains a synthetic enzyme that can cure or create any virus on Earth."

She explained that she had been assigned to eliminate me when the project was deemed too dangerous.

But when she looked into my crib, she decided to burn the laboratory down and steal me instead.

"I loved you from the second I saw you," she said, tears mixing with the river water on her face.

A violent explosion suddenly shook the entire underground facility.

Dust and debris rained down from the concrete ceiling as the heavy steel door buckled.

"They are breaching the main entrance!" my mother shouted.

She grabbed two heavy assault rifles from the weapon rack and tossed one directly to me.

"Just point it at the door and pull the trigger," she ordered firmly.

The steel door finally blew completely off its hinges with a deafening crash.

Five heavily armed mercenaries wearing tactical gas masks stormed into the room.

My mother opened fire with terrifying precision, dropping three of the men instantly.

I squeezed my eyes shut and pulled the trigger, spraying bullets wildly toward the entrance.

The sheer recoil of the weapon knocked me backward onto the floor.

But the distraction was enough for my mother to eliminate the remaining attackers.

"We have to use the emergency escape tunnel before their backup arrives," she yelled.

She grabbed a heavy backpack filled with cash and hard drives.

We ran to the back of the bunker and pried open a circular metal hatch in the floor.

We slid down a metal chute into a dark, damp sewage tunnel.

We ran blindly through the pitch-black tunnels for what felt like hours.

We finally climbed up a rusted ladder and pushed a heavy manhole cover aside.

We emerged into the quiet, moonlit woods miles away from the compromised safehouse.

I took a deep breath of fresh air, thinking we had finally escaped the nightmare.

Then the distinct sound of a gun hammer clicking back echoed from the shadows.

Mark stepped out from behind a large oak tree, pointing his weapon directly at my mother's head.
