Chapter 7 - The Unexpected Shield

Alejandro violently slammed his partner against the living room wall, knocking the silenced pistol completely out of his hand.

He furiously screamed that he wanted the remaining half of his payment before anyone took the girl away.

The tall gunman aggressively punched Alejandro in the broken shoulder, sending him crashing onto the glass coffee table.

The two ruthless criminals engaged in a brutal, bloody fight over the massive duffel bag of money resting near the door.

I completely ignored the chaotic violence and frantically scanned the living room for any sign of Sofia.

I noticed a small, trembling shadow hiding perfectly beneath the long curtains near the back patio door.

I dropped the heavy butcher knife and sprinted fiercely across the room toward the hidden shadow.

Sofia was curled into a tiny ball, crying silently and covering her ears with her small hands.

I grabbed her forcefully, pulling her into my arms and completely shielding her small body with my own.

I unlocked the heavy glass patio door and pushed it open, carrying her out into the freezing, torrential rain.

We ran blindly across the muddy backyard, slipping and sliding toward the tall wooden fence.

I hoisted her over the wooden planks, completely ignoring the sharp splinters tearing deeply into my palms.

I climbed over right behind her, dropping heavily onto the wet asphalt of the dark alleyway.

We desperately sprinted down the street, completely drenched and deeply terrified of being followed.

A bright pair of headlights suddenly turned the corner, blinding me with their intense white glare.

I jumped perfectly into the middle of the road, waving my arms frantically to stop the approaching vehicle.

The car slammed on its brakes, skidding loudly on the wet pavement before stopping just inches away from my legs.

I looked desperately through the windshield and saw the glorious, unmistakable flashing blue lights of a police cruiser.

I pulled open the back door and practically threw Sofia and myself onto the vinyl seats.

I cried tears of profound relief as I told the uniformed officer that we were being actively hunted by armed kidnappers.

The officer looked deeply into the rearview mirror, his face completely hidden by the dark shadows of the car.

He slowly locked the rear doors with a loud, mechanical click and calmly shifted the cruiser back into drive.
