Chapter 1 - The Unspoken Threat

My heart stopped completely when my five-year-old daughter asked if someone would get mad.

I sat on the edge of her bed and stroked her dark, curly hair.

I softly promised her that nobody would ever be angry with her for telling the truth.

Sofia squeezed her stuffed bunny tightly against her chest and opened her mouth to speak.

Before she could form a single word, the bedroom door slowly pushed open with a quiet creak.

Alejandro stood in the doorway holding a warm glass of milk in his large hands.

His eyes locked onto mine with a cold, piercing intensity I had never seen from him before.

He smiled his usual gentle smile and told me that it was time for Sofia to get some rest.

I felt a sudden, terrifying chill crawl slowly up my spine as I looked at my husband.

Sofia instantly went entirely rigid and pulled the heavy blanket up to her chin.

The silence that filled the small bedroom was heavy, suffocating, and deeply unnatural.

I kissed my daughter on the forehead and reluctantly followed Alejandro out into the hallway.

That night, I lay wide awake staring at the dark ceiling while my husband slept peacefully beside me.

I knew with absolute certainty that I could no longer ignore the terrifying warning signs.

The next morning, I kissed Alejandro goodbye and pretended to drive away to the clothing store.

I parked my car three blocks away and waited in the pouring rain for hours.

When the clock struck two in the afternoon, I quietly walked back to my own house.

I slipped my metal key into the front door and pushed it open without making a single sound.

I could hear the bathwater running loudly on the second floor.

I crept silently up the wooden stairs, my heart pounding violently against my bruised ribs.

I reached the bathroom and peeked carefully through the small, unlit crack in the door.

What I saw made all the warm blood drain completely from my face.

Alejandro was not bathing my daughter at all.

He was aggressively holding her small arm and speaking in a harsh whisper into a black burner phone.

He told the person on the other end that the buyer could pick the merchandise up by midnight.
